EGS TIP JAR
|
As is the case with many web comics, a lot of time and hard work goes into EGS without much naturally occurring monetary return. While the goal is for the comic to support itself through ads, books, and other assorted merchandise, it can be a long road to reach that goal. Donations (or as I prefer to call them, tips) are always appreciated. This isn't my way of saying I desperately need money (it'll be obvious when I'm desperate). I think of it more as me having a free comic strip stand with a tip jar on the counter. There's something to be had in return, however! For every $100 donated to El Goonish Shive, I will make a desktop background and post it on the website in 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x960 formats. This means if 100 people donate $1 each, everyone gets new backgrounds. If you have any questions, see if you can find them and the appropriate answers below. If you don't find the answers, e-mail me at egshive@sbcglobal.net (put "EGS" in the subject). |

What Donation Methods Are There? What Donation Methods Are There? I currently only accept donations through PayPal. PayPal is used by the likes of EBay, I trust it, and it doesn't require me to give out personal information to everyone who donates. If you want to donate but you are unable to through PayPal, don't feel too badly about it. You can still help just by reading the comic and suggesting it to others ^_^ . Back to Top - Back to Top of FAQ When Will the Backgrounds Be Made Available? The backgrounds will be made available ASAP once $100 has been donated. This means if I have a background already made, I'll upload the files and have them available with the next update. If I don't have a background made in advance, I will make it, and upload it for the next update as soon as it's done. Ideally, I will have backgrounds ready ahead of time all the time, but it will really depend on how frequently people are donating, and what else is going on in my life. In any case, I won't dilly-dally when it comes to getting new backgrounds up once they've been earned. Back to Top - Back to Top of FAQ Where Will the Backgrounds Be On the Site? You can find the backgrounds here. You'll eventually be able to reach them from here, the main page, the site map, and the pulldown storyline menu. Back to Top - Back to Top of FAQ What Will be in the Background Images? They could be any number of things. A background could be as simple as a portrait of one or more El Goonish Shive characters, complex as a scene that could tell a story by itself, or as non-sequitor as some character that has nothing to do directly with El Goonish Shive morphing in some cool way. Basically, the backgrounds could be anything. More tips will mean more backgrounds to choose from, so hopefully there'll be something for everybody eventually. In any case, I'm open to suggestions. Back to Top - Back to Top of FAQ I'm not going to give a full course on computer desktops, but I will provide a basic explanation of the desktop backgrounds. You know how when you don't have any windows or folder or programs open, and you're just looking at your desktop, and how there might be an image behind a bunch of icons? That's what these "background" images are for; you can set them as the image behind the icons on your desktop. In Windows, you can generally right-click where there isn't an icon, select properties, select the properties tag, and then browse for a background you've saved on your computer. In some internet browsers, you can right-click on the image you want for your background, and select something similar to "set as background". Back to Top - Back to Top of FAQ How Accurate is the "Tips for Backgrounds Bar"? The bar is updated at the same time as the comic assuming I've had a chance to accurately check how many donations have been made since the last time it was updated. It's not constantly updating, and it's manual, so it's just there to give a very general idea of how far along donations are. I'll have an announcement in the news on the main page when there's a new background up, so it's not the only way to tell when new backgrounds are coming. Back to Top - Back to Top of FAQ What if 200 or More Dollars are Donated on a Single Day? I wouldn't expect this to happen, but it actually happened once with the old donation system, so I figure I should be ready for the farfetched possibility of it happening again. As stated above, backgrounds come with the next update after the last $100 was reached. If by some miracle 2 or more backgrounds are earned in a single day, I will have them go up one at a time, one per update. The reason for this is to keep me from burning out on backgrounds, and to keep me from finding myself needing to choose between the next comic or making backgrounds. This scenario will probably never come up, but if it does, it'll basically result in one new background each day for the following couple of days. Back to Top - Back to Top of FAQ Why do Some Backgrounds Have Darkness on the Left Side? Some people complained that they had trouble seeing the icons on their desktop due to the brightness of the backgrounds, and I could see their point. I can also see how people might not like that darkness, however, so I'm plotting and scheming to have versions with and without the darkness, though I'm holding off a bit in the hopes of getting a more efficient system set up in place of having seperate html pages for each and every background (and for each size thereof). I would just use javascript, but people have a tendency to complain when I do that... though I may just wind up using javascript anyway, as I currently have three webpages for every background when I should be able to have just one. In any case, I try to avoid having anything interesting on the left side of the backgrounds so that nothing worth staring at gets covered by desktop shortcuts. |
